AVTEC...Great careers for Alaska's future!
Alaska Vocational Technical Center

Welcome to the Facility Maintenance Construction Trades program. Maintenance technicians and skilled construction workers are in short supply throughout Alaska today, both in urban and in rural areas. As a result, graduates of AVTEC's Facility Maintenance Construction Trades program enjoy excellent job opportunities and good pay--whether they work in the residential, commercial, or new construction fields. Students in this program receive basic training in maintenance and construction practices in carpentry, plumbing, heating, and electrical systems--a wide variety of experience that prepares them for entry-level employment and apprenticeships in the maintenance and building trades.

National Center for Construction Education
and Research (NCCER)

AVTEC’s Facility Maintenance Construction Trades program is accredited through the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER).

Students gain practical experience by maintaining AVTEC’s training and living facilities. This training includes outdoor activities. Students will need appropriate clothing for cold and wet working conditions.

Students learn to operate table, radial arm, and band saws, planers, and sanders and use pipe cutters, power threaders, and all types of plumbing hand tools in training. Students also learn to use electrical test and measuring instruments.

Approximately 50% of the program is hands-on and 50% is classroom instruction. Training includes outdoor activities, so students need appropriate clothing for cold and wet working conditions.
